Paperboy Ventures was named for my first job -- delivering newspapers to save up for college. The name speaks to working-class values, to on-time delivery in all kinds of weather, to the value of bringing forth new ideas that people can use. After studying mathematics at M.I.T., I joined the Peace Corps and taught calculus in Central American universities. I did not imagine at the time that Central America would become a primary focus of my life's work forty years later. In the years that followed, I drifted into software engineering, developing new methods and products in particle physics, radiology, document processing, telephony, speech recognition, robotics, and this and that. Along the way, the entrepreneur in me slowly emerged out of necessity so that I could try out original designs instead of churning out derivative products to order. Though my technological feats were most often accompanied by commercial failure, I had a couple of hits in document processing and telecommunications. Over the decades, I tried a hundred times to persuade an uncomprehending financier that a mathematical insight had an inherent commercial value or that an ethic of on-time R&D could steal a march on the other guy's technology. Now that I'm often on the other side of the desk, I look first for genius and passion in our scientific collaborators, and only then labor beside them to make their dreams real. Working-class values and respect for working scientists will always be central to Paperboy Ventures. Several years ago, my family decided to put our gains to work for the people of Central America, where I had taught nearly forty years ago. We began with a plan to build libraries and community centers in remote farm communities. As our businesses prospered, so did our ambitions; and now we seek to bring prosperity and democracy to the region through projects for environmental protection, human rights advocacy, independent news media, and transparency in business and politics. Paperboy Ventures partner companies also enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that their success can serve our planet twice over. Thank you for visiting with us. I do hope you will take a few moments to learn a little more about the fascinating companies we are fortunate to work with. |
